Avennia Winery to open new tasting room in Woodinville to accommodate demand for its award-winning wines
 

New facility, scheduled for Nov. opening, to reflect elegance and quality of Avennia brand
 

WOODINVILLE, Wash. (Sept. 15, 2016) – Avennia, one of the most acclaimed wineries in Washington State, today announced that it will open a new tasting room in Woodinville to accommodate growing demand from consumers for its wines.

Since Avennia’s first release in September 2012, all of the winery’s tastings and events have been held in the winery facility located in Woodinville’s warehouse wine district.

Since then, there’s been a steady increase in requests for tasting appointments from Avennia club members and consumers who have heard about the wines and want to experience them, said Avennia managing partner Marty Taucher. 

“This is the next logical step in the evolution and growth of Avennia,” Taucher said. “Our winery is great for our release events and wine club parties, but just isn’t set up to accommodate this boom in requests for tastings. We’re creating a space for our customers that reflects the elegance and quality of the Avennia brand.”

To help accomplish this goal, Taucher turned to Joe Chauncey of Boxwood, who developed Avennia’s distinctive packaging.

“When designing the brand and package for Avennia, we used the overlapping grape vine watercolor and logo to create labels that speak to the high art in each bottle,” Chauncey said. “The tasting room is an extension of that move, with individual bottles displayed and lit like pieces of sculpture in a gallery, a low dark oak tasting bar angled to promote conversations, a special area for reserve and VIP tastings, and an overall feeling of upscale quality.”

Construction has started on the new tasting room, which is located on Woodinville-Snohomish Road just off Highway 522 and adjacent to the new Hampton Inn and Suites currently under construction. Taucher said he anticipates opening the Avennia tasting room sometime in mid-November.

The new space will be approximately 1,000 square feet and will be open for public tastings five days a week to start, with additional hours added as needed. Guests also will be able to make reservations for reserve tastings of Avennia’s library wines and reserve bottlings. The new tasting room also will have plenty of available parking for guests, Taucher said.

“We still plan to host release events and occasional parties at the original winery location, but the new tasting room will be a place for people to reach out and explore what Avennia has to offer,” Taucher said. “It also will be a convenient location for our membership program subscribers to swing by and pick up allocations and releases.”

New Wine Brand from the Team at Avennia

Avennia Winery launches Les Trouvés, wines inspired by Provence 
and born from the abundance of Washington’s outstanding wine regions

 

WOODINVILLE, Wash. (July 14, 2015) – Avennia, one of the most acclaimed wineries in Washington State, today announced the launch of Les Trouvés – a Washington wine brand inspired by the country wines from the Provence region of France.

Les Trouvés (pronounced lay troo-vay) roughly translates from French as ‘the found,’ and that certainly describes this new offering of wines curated by Avennia winemaker Chris Peterson and managing partner Marty Taucher.

“Les Trouvés was born out of the abundance that Washington offers in terms of high quality wines,” Peterson said. “There are huge amounts of very good wines from around the state that are delicious and complex, and just waiting for a context in which to be placed.

“What we add is that context: a rigorous commitment to quality and thoughtful blending from different sources to create complete, delicious wines that deliver great value.”

The inaugural releases, a 2013 red ($25 SRP) and a 2013 white ($18 SRP), will be available for order on July 14 (Bastille Day) via the brand’s web site, www.lestrouveswines.com. The red wine will be available for pick-up by appointment after July 20. Both wines will be available for tasting, purchase and pick-up at a public open house Sunday, Aug. 23, at Avennia’s winery facility in Woodinville.

Other wines may be launched in the future under the Les Trouvés label, Taucher said.

“This is an exciting opportunity for our team and our many distribution, retail and on-premise partners,” Taucher said. “Chris has clearly demonstrated the talent to create world-class wines for Avennia. Les Trouvés leverages that talent and enables a broader market to experience these wines.”

The 2013 Les Trouvés red wine delivers a juicy palate structure that balances rich red fruit with savory acidity, Peterson said.

“This is just what we love about the regional wines from Provence,” he said. “It is very approachable now, but complex enough to hold our interest.”

Les Trouvés (www.lestrouveswines.com) was inspired by the negociant model that plays such an important part in the history of the French wine industry. The Avennia team invested a lot of time to specifically search out, select and assemble Les Trouvés wines from outstanding sources around Washington State in order to reflect the region’s unique version of the spirit of Provence, Taucher said.

Peterson was able to find excellent sources of wine by leveraging relationships he has nurtured in over more than a decade in Washington’s wine industry. In producing Les Trouvés wines, he is drawing on his experience in blending wines from different areas to create a line of wines that reflect a passion for creating balanced, complex and delicious wines that can be enjoyed every day with a wide variety of food.

“Many of my weeknight, go-to wines come from negociants in the South of France,” Peterson said. “As a result, many of our blending decisions are inspired and informed from a long history of enjoying those wines.

“These wines are meant to be enjoyed as soon as you like, as often as you like and appreciated for what they are – a testament to the abundance and versatility of Washington’s winegrowing regions.” 

Taucher said the wines will be distributed regionally in the Pacific Northwest through Avennia’s existing retail channels and in selected on premise outlets in addition to online orders via www.lestrouveswines.com and direct sales from the winery.

"The good folks at Avennia brought out a tank sample of its 2014 L'Egerie-Dry rose' ($25) and all I can say is “wow.” Two-thirds Grenache and one-third Mouvedre make this rosé shimmer with a salmon pink hue. You’ll definitely pick up the hint of strawberry here, but you’re also just as likely to detect a little bit of watermelon and lavender, which makes L'Egerie a “must have” as you spread out your picnic blanket this summer. It’s a limited release, so I would recommend getting on this one right away."

Chris Peterson's Journey from DeLille to Avennia

WOODINVILLE, Wash. – When Chris Peterson decided to get into the wine business, he was the first person to go through Walla Walla Community College’s now-vaunted winemaking program, then he landed at one of Washington’s greatest wineries.

Today, Peterson co-owns Avennia, one of the hottest young producers in Washington, and now works with two retired National Football League quarterbacks on another project.

We recently sat down with Peterson to talk about his time with DeLille Cellars and his move to Avennia.

Spectacular Press for Avennia and Winemaker Chris Peterson

Greetings.

The past 6 months have been spectacular for press and accolades for both Avennia and our Winemaker Chris Peterson. Here is a summary of our recent reviews and accolades:

June 2014   - Wall Street Journal, Lettie Teague: Inside Washington Warehouse Wineries. This article features a terrific overview of some of the up and coming warehouse wineries in Woodinville with a nice photo, and tasting note for our 2011 Gravura BDX blend, “Because he has been in the Washington winemaking world for some time, Mr. Peterson has access to fruit from the state's top vineyards like Klipsun and Boushey. I was particularly impressed by the 2011 Avennia Gravura ($35), a Bordeaux-style blend made of fruit sourced from a variety of vineyards, including Klipsun and Red Willow.”

June 2014: The Wine Advocate:  Jeb Dunnuck joined the Advocate in 2013 after many years of publishing the Rhone Report, a terrific quarterly newsletter, which he started in 2008. He now covers Washington State wines as part of his broader Wine Advocate responsibilities. We have had the pleasure of hosting Jeb at Avennia during his trips to the Seattle area over the last couple of years. Recently, he tasted our 2012 vintage wines from barrel, the scores of which were published in the June issue. Excerpts from the barrel tasting:

2013 Oliane Sauvignon Blanc: (90-92) “its citrus blossom, mineral and lychee style bouquet, medium-bodied richness and overall lively, yet layered and rich feel on the palate”.

2012 Arnaut Syrah: (94-96) “Arnaut is a smoking barrel sample that’s loaded with potential. Blackberry, pepper, bloody meat, salty minerality and earth are just some of the nuances here”.

2012 Justine Southern Rhone Blend: (91-93+) “Structured, firm and muscular, it gives up plenty of peppery herbs, mineral, iron, beef blood and black cherry to go with a medium to full-bodied, savory profile on the palate”.

Wines Without Worry

In September, the press coverage picked up again, starting with a terrific reference to our Oliane Sauvignon Blanc in Jameson Fink’s Wines Without Worry Blog. Jameson posts a compelling blog and podcast. You can find a link to this particular post at jamesonfink.com.

Finally, with the strength of the local wine industry in the Seattle area, it should come as no surprise that local magazines do annual round-ups of the latest releases. Seattle Met Magazine is one of the more prominent ones and they have retained Washington Wine Report and Wine Enthusiast writer Sean Sullivan to conduct the 2014 evaluation. 700 wines were submitted and the results were published in the October issue.  Avennia wines showed extraordinarily well, starting with the 2012 Oliane Sauvignon Blanc being named the #1 White Wine. To quote Sean: “Drink This -With someone you love, because you won’t want to share it with anyone else.” Our 2011 Sestina was named #3 Bordeaux style blend and the 2011 Arnaut Syrah came in at #2. We are in the middle of harvest right now and will crush close to 65 tons as we continue to grow to meet the demand from our mailing list, local and national distribution partners.

 

Winemaker Chris Peterson’s thoughts on this year’s harvest:

“2014 will be remembered as one of the warmest vintages in Washington State. Intense summer heat developed the fruit quickly and lasted throughout the season. Each benchmark, from bud break and flowering to veraison, was reached seven to ten days ahead of normal.

Warm temperatures continued through the third week of September, ripening the grapes earlier than normal. At just under a month from start to finish, this will be the quickest harvest ever at Avennia. This year it was important to visit the vineyards as often as possible, as just a few days could mean the difference between perfectly ripe fruit and over-ripeness.

All in all, this looks to be another very good Washington vintage, with large scaled, friendly wines that should be approachable from an early age.”

Avennia shows well in new Washington State wine report available at www.timatkin.com

Last summer, Christy Canterbury (MW) along with Tim Atkin(MW, publisher of timatkin.com, the International Wine Website of the year for 2013), visited Washington State for a comprehensive tour and tasting. They traveled and tasted on both sides of the Cascades, interviewing the grape growers and the winemakers that have put Washington on the map. Christy was charged with writing up the Washington State Special Report, which was just released at www.timatkin.com and is now available for download.

We highly recommend downloading this report. The tasting notes alone are worth the price of admission and the overview provides a great snapshot of the Washington State wine industry at this time.  Avennia showed quite nicely. Christy ranked 82 wineries in five categories. Cayuse, DeLille and Leonetti were each awarded Five Star Status. Avennia was awarded Four Stars, which places us in very fine company right beside Andrew Will, Betz, Cadence, Gramercy, Force Majeure, No Girls, Woodward Canyon - among others. We are proud to be included with this group.

Christy tasted 324 wines for the report. Individually, our wines were rated among the best.

Highlights:

2011 Justine Southern Rhone Blend – 94“The nose is aromatically dense (thanks in part to 15% whole cluster use) with barbecue spice, red plum, red currant, blueberry and rose.”

2010 Sestina BDX Blend – 94 “layers of youthful juiciness display something new with every sip starting with cassis, evergreen and underbrush”

2010 Gravura BDX Blend – 93“this exuberantly fresh and crunchy wine shows a light touch of cocoa and an abundance of forest berries”

2012 Oliane Sauvignon Blanc  - 91 ” smells of lightly toasted coconut, roasted hazelnuts and vanilla bean rather than bold Sauvignon Blanc fruits like gooseberry and grapefruit
