97 points - Red Willow Cabernet Sauvignon - our highest score yet

New Wine Advocate Reviews Just Released, Avennia's scores are some of the highest in the state.

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate recently published its annual comprehensive survey of Washington wines, authored by Jeb Dunnuck, and we are proud and humbled to announce that all ten wines we submitted from our 2014 vintage scored 92 points or higher. We are particularly thrilled that a few of our wines scored among the highest in the state!

Jeb was quite complimentary to Winemaker Chris Peterson’s winemaking style. From Jeb: “Some of my favorite wines from Washington unquestionably come from Chris Peterson’s Avennia label. Chris makes a savory, classic, even old-school style of wine that still carries plenty of concentration, freshness, and structure. As to his 2014s, most of which were tasted from bottle, these showed brilliantly, and this is a rare estate that makes both world-class Syrahs and world-class Bordeaux blends. Don’t miss these wines!”

Crafting our wines is truly a team effort, impossible to do without the wonderful relationships we enjoy with our vineyard partners throughout Eastern Washington. As of now, all the 2014 vintage wines are still available, but some of them are already in very limited supply.  Available on our website and in our tasting room, while they last.

Here are Jeb's comments on his Avennia favorites:

2014 Red Willow, Cabernet Sauvignon 97 points
"In the top handful of wines in the vintage, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Willow Vineyard is a tiny-production release that comes from a single parcel in the Red Willow Vineyard in the Yakima Valley. Unfortunately, there are just 100 cases made, but it is a sensational wine. Cassis, graphite, crushed rocks and lead pencil characteristics all emerge from the glass, and this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, first-growth-like purity, fine tannin and a great, great finish. Bravo!" - JD

2014 Sestina, Left Bank Bordeaux Blend 95 points
"The Left Bank-style/Cabernet-dominated wine is the 2014 Sestina, and in 2014 it's a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Cassis, licorice, violets, lead pencil shavings and hints of herbs all give way to a layered, full-bodied, multi-dimensional wine that has sweet tannin and a great finish. It's about as voluptuous and sexy a wine as Chris has ever made." - JD

2014 Arnaut, Boushey Vineyard Syrah 95 points
"Deeper and richer than the Justine cuvee, the 100% Syrah 2014 Syrah Boushey Vineyard Arnaut (aged 16 months in 15% new French oak) is a sensational wine that offers awesome purity, full-bodied richness, ripe tannin and a great finish. With classic notes of black and blue fruits, pepper, olive, graphite and lavender, this sexy Syrah is going to drink nicely for at least a decade." - JD

2014 Valery, Right Bank Bordeaux blend 94 points
"The Right Bank-styled effort from this estate is the 2014 Valery (60/40 Merlot and Cabernet Franc), and it sports a deep ruby/purple-tinged color as well as a rounded, sexy style in its black cherry, plum, chocolate and earth-driven aromas and flavors. Expansive, full-bodied and downright sumptuous, drink this pleasure-bent beauty over the coming decade or more." - JD
